But since you, your family, and your guests will also be seeing it every day, you want it to be classic and attractive, without drawing too much attention from the rest of your decor.

Wall lighting is an easy way to light your home without going through the hassle of installing ceiling lights, and without losing space to floor lamps. The wide variety of lamps out there now guarantee that you’ll find the perfect kind for your home, price range, and sense of style.

There are three main types of wall lighting: sconces, shades, and swing arm lamps. All three have pros and cons.

SCONCES

Sconces are what most people think of when they think of wall lighting. They are elegant, simple, and a great way to add light to a room. This type does not provide a ton of light, so if you need to illuminate a large area, you may consider another type of lighting.

GLASS SHADES

These are a newer type of lighting. This wall lamp is a bulb with a curved piece of glass over it. Unlike most wall sconces, the light is directed outward, not up toward the ceiling. SWING ARM LAMPS

Swing arm lamps are excellent if you need to illuminate a small area. These are great if you need some extra light for reading or working on homework. There are kinds that attach to walls, as well as ones for desks and stationary floor versions.

They are not ideal for lighting an entire room. Also, they aren’t great for kids’ rooms – anything with moving parts can easily be broken by overeager little hands.
