Desk lamps
Desk lamps serve a very clear purpose. It’s a functional object, but it can serve an aesthetic purpose as well. There are a variety of desk lamps out there that will suit your workspace and your wallet.
Apart from choosing a lamp you like to look at, you have to consider what type of bulb you want. There are four common types: halogen, LED, compact fluorescent (CFL’s), and traditional incandescent bulbs (the kind you have in most of the lights around your house).
BULBS
* Halogen bulbs are a type of incandescent lighting that utilize one of the halogen chemicals (such as iodine, chlorine, fluorine, and others) to make the bulb brighter and hotter than traditional bulbs.
* Because of the chemical makeup, halogen bulbs also have a longer lifespan than traditional bulbs.
* The light they give off is extremely bright and easy to focus over a small area (like a desk, for instance).
* The bulb has to heat up quite a bit to function properly. A halogen bulb can easily reach over 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Because of this, it is important to make sure a halogen lamp isn’t near anything flammable.
* If you have a very small or crowded workspace, or one that heats up easily, you may want to consider a desk lamp with a different type of bulb.
* Short for “light-emitting diode,” LED lights tend to have a longer lifespan and use less energy than traditional bulbs.
* They also tend to be more expensive than regular bulbs.
* LED lights can produce the same amount of light as a regular bulb with a much smaller surface area.
* Unlike traditional bulbs, LED lights won’t wear out faster if they are turned on and off often.
* Most LED lights also have a dimmer switch.
* Unlike halogen and traditional bulbs, LED lights produce very little heat.
* LED lights produce softer, more ambient lighting than other types of bulbs.
* Compact fluorescent lights, or CFLs, are very trendy right now. They are often referred to as the “energy saving light.”
* CFLs are more expensive than regular bulbs, but use less electricity over their lifespan.
* They produce a soft white light that is similar to traditional bulbs.
Traditional bulbs
* These are the traditional 40-100 watt bulbs that you have around the house.
* This kind of light is cheaper and easier to find in stores.
* Traditional incandescent bulbs give off a varying amount of light depending on their wattage.
* These bulbs give off an average amount of heat, but like all bulbs, pose a fire hazard if left on for too long or if they are too close to flammable objects.
Once you’ve decided what type of bulb you want, it’s important to decide how much room you have for the light. You can buy a floor lamp with a movable arm to go over your desk area, a clip-on light that attaches to the edge of your desk, or a regular lamp that sits on your desk. Home lighting mart provides each of these kinds of bulbs and styles of lamps.
