Fireplace Glossary

Inserts – Inserts are used to update a traditional fireplace to provide even more authenticity.  Many place their inserts into old fireplaces that already have mantels built in.  This is a great way to incorporate a traditional fireplace that might have not been used much in the past due to the mess and potential safety hazards.

Creosote – Very flammable by-product of combustion that builds up in a chimney.  This causes “chimney fires” and is yet another safety concern for those with traditional fireplaces.

Glass Panel – Safety and energy feature incorporated in different types of fireplaces to better control the warmth.

Mantel – The decorative facing around a fireplace.  A shelf above the fireplace is also considered a mantel.

Vent Free – Used to describe those fireplaces that require no chimneys, flues or pipes.
