Bunk Bed Buying Guide

Many of us have memories of sharing a bedroom with a sibling during our childhoods.  In an effort to maximize the .bedroom’s space, many of our parents opted for bunk beds.  This usually always resulted in an argument over who would claim the top bunk with usually the oldest sibling claiming it just by virtue of being born first.  Today’s bunk beds are available in many styles and with additional safety features that weren’t available years ago.  If you’re considering bunk beds for your home (and they’re not just for kids anymore), we’ve highlighted some facts and features of today’s more contemporary bunk beds.

Twin Over Full Bunk Bed

Perhaps if this were an option when we were kids, there might not have been so many wars over who got the “best” bed.  The fact the bottom bunk was bigger could have evened the playing field between the siblings.

One might’ve got the cool upper bunk, but the bottom bunk would’ve been bigger; such as the case with the twin over full bunk bed.  Just as the name implies, the twin bed is stacked over a double bed.  These are great for guest rooms.  When guests arrive, they have the advantage of the double bed and the upper bunk can easily accommodate a child.  For those families with three children, this is the perfect solution for the little ones who share a room.  They’re available in a number of styles, including solid wood, metal, with or without trundles or other accessories.  Not only that, but today’s bunk beds provide safety railings for the top bunks to prevent falls or roll-offs.

Trundle Bunk Beds

Yet another great idea born from limited space, trundles are storage drawers that slide under the bed.  They’re a great solution for that space that never gets used under a bed.  Many of today’s trundle beds come in oak, pine or other fine hard woods.

Futon Bunk Beds

Futons have become the new “must-have” in home furnishings.  What better way to incorporate this great style than within a bunk bed design?  Part of the futon’s popularity is its ease of transforming into either of its uses – as a bed or as a seating area.  These are great in guest rooms or in a child’s bedroom.

Safety Tips:

It’s important to keep in mind a few safety tips when you’re buying bunk beds of any style. The first tip is to consider any ceiling fans or light fixtures.  Ensure the space you have designated has clearance from moving blades and the lights.

As you’re assembling the bunks, double check the ladder’s stability as well as any safety rails.  Double check the mattresses too to ensure they fit.  A too-large mattress is an accident waiting to happen on a top bunk.
