Buffet and Dining Room Glossary

Credenza – Name used interchangeably with buffet or sideboard.

China Cabinet – A large cabinet with glass doors used to display china, crystal and other delicate items.

Corner Cupboard – Similar to a china cabinet, but designed to fit snugly into a corner.

Gallery – Small railing used for ornamental purposes that follows the tops of cabinets, buffets, tables or credenzas.

Hutch – Low-seated cabinet, sometimes with open shelves and usually accompanied by a china cabinet that sits atop the hutch.

Plinth Base – Larger half of a stacked cabinet group that recesses out and supports the weight of a second cabinet (china cabinet and hutch).
