Bedroom Furniture Buying Guide

Why is it we hold on to bedroom furniture far longer than we do our other furniture?  If you’ve decided to take a look at new bedroom furniture collections, here are some thoughts to keep in mind.

Still the most sought after look, wood bedroom furniture is a classic that simply never goes out of style.  If your room can support entire collections, there’s nothing more elegant than a grand headboard and footboard that’s complemented by matching nightstands, a stunning armoire and handsome chests. Before you decide to purchase any furniture, and especially bedroom furniture, going into it with no measurements is never a good idea.

Here are the standard measurements for bed sizes:

Twin Beds are generally forty inches in width and 75 inches or long.  Keep in mind for extra long twin beds, you’ll need to add an additional five inches to the length.

  • Full Beds (also known as double beds) are around 55 inches in width and 75 inches long.
  • Queen Beds come in at sixty inches in width and eighty inches in length.
  • King Beds are generally seventy six inches in width and eighty inches long.
  • California King Beds come in at seventy two inches wide by eighty four inches in length.

Of course you’ll want to choose the most bed for the space in your bedroom, but don’t forget to allow room to easily maneuver around the bed.  There’s nothing more frustrating than trying to change sheets on a bed that’s pushed against a wall.

Consider your wardrobe and other things you typically store in a dresser drawer.  Most will agree there’s no such thing as too much drawer space.  Select your nightstand with a large enough tabletop to support a sturdy lamp and perhaps a small framed photograph.  There are a variety of designs for every taste, including those with or without doors or drawers.  Be sure the height will complement your bed.  Generally speaking, you’ll want to the top to be no higher than your mattress.

Don’t forget the accessories; they’re what finish the look of your new bedroom furniture set.  Some great ideas include mirrors, sconces and paintings.  With just a little forethought, you can easily bring the look of your bedroom current with the look and feel of the rest of your house.
