Office Desks

The best thing about a home office is the fact you are the one who designs it according to your specific needs and wants.  It’s up to you to determine not only where it’s ultimately located, but you are also the primary decision maker when it comes to the style, arrangement and even how much is invested.  It could be a simple computer desk will meet your needs or if you’re considering telecommuting or even going to work for yourself, you may feel an entire furniture set, complete with bookshelves and a credenza is your best choice.

Before you buy, there are a few considerations to keep in mind.  Ask yourself how much time you’ll realistically be spending in your home office.  How much space do you have to commit to your home office? 

Will you be splitting your time between your traditional office and your office at home and if so, will your files be shared between the two? 

Hutch desks, sometimes referred to as secretary desks, are great for small areas since they offer desk space that’s easily concealed as well as the inclusion of file drawers and other pockets commonly used for paper clips, pens and other desktop items .  You’ll find these in a number of wood finishes, including mahogany, cherry, pine or oak. 

Metal desks are still a favorite due to their durability and the fact they’re lightweight.  Most come with pullout desktops that can provide temporary desktop space and are more forgiving with any dings or scratches they receive over the years.

One important consideration you’ll want to ensure your choice incorporates is the punch outs in the back of the desk for various computer and printer cords.  This allows you to keep them neatly out of sight and better organized.  And speaking of organization, you might consider the double pedestal desk which offers drawer space on both sides of the desk or even a matching file cabinet.

Keep in mind, too, the actual desktops are available in many lengths and widths.  If you anticipate the need for a larger workspace, you might wish to incorporate one of these larger desktops for that purpose.
