Living Room Furniture Glossary

Area Rugs – Large rugs placed in the center of rooms such as living or dining rooms and can be moved.  They’re usually placed over carpeting or hard wood floors.

Alcove -  A recessed part of a room or sometimes found under a home’s stairwell.  Many like to make these into nooks for reading or as a substitute for an office since a desk usually fits nicely into the space.

Slip Covers – Sometimes custom-made (but can be purchased without custom measurements) used for covering furniture.  These are sometimes used when the room is remodeled and new furniture can’t be purchased but needs to match the new theme.

Arm Caps – Coverings for arm rests on upholstered furniture to prevent wear and tear.

Mantel – Shelf above the fireplace.

Tea Table – A spin of the traditional coffee table, these smaller versions have edges that are raised.
